Shane Hmiel Named Pavement Champion RWB Takes the Top 2 Spots for 2010
August 23, 2010 - Shane Hmiel claimed his fourth Sprint pavement victory of the season at Winchester Speedway this Sunday. The win marked his second this month and garnered him the title: 2010 USAC Sprint Pavement Champion. Winning four Pavement Sprint races this season, Hmiel finished in the top spot ahead of teammate Bryan Clauson. The duo claimed victories in all but one of the pavement events this year.
Bringing the #17 Rotondo Weirich/Three Wide Life/Champion brands Beast/ITI into victory lane on Sunday afternoon, Hmiel gave credit to his team, "Our car is good. We won the Rich Volger and the Hoosier Hundred. I’m not a very good driver, but this car is amazing." Here at RW, we’d like to think the driving has a little bit to do with it as well! With a little over a year’s experience on the dirt, Hmiel has landed himself in the Top Ten overall for the USAC National Sprint Championship points race. This coupled with a win in both the Silver Crown & Midget Series makes for an exciting season so far. Track-side for the victory, Steve Weirich shared his thoughts, "I am just extremely proud of this team. Shane’s performance on pavement has been outstanding all year and the preparation of the car by Scott Benic and the entire RWB team is exceptional."
Bryan Clauson took the second spot in the pavement points title, with a 7th place finish in Winchester and two previous wins at Berlin and Iowa. Holding steady in the third spot overall, Clauson looks to gain momentum through Lincoln Park, Terre Haute and, of course, for the famed Four Crown Nationals at Eldora in September where the entire RW roster will be on hand for the event in Rossburg.
Look for more exciting news from the RW team this month and as always we welcome your comments and feedback!

Two Top Fives, One Win & The Fastest Man in a Sprint Car
A full roster of RWB Drivers hit the pavement this past Saturday at the Iowa Speedway. USAC’s three open wheel divisions all running in the Casey’s General Store Triple Crown Pride of Iowa event. Shane Hmiel, piloting the #17, Maxim/Gaerte Chevy, not only grabbed the pole position for the National Sprint feature event, put his claim on the fastest time, ever. Hmiel broke the standing record set four years ago by Darren Hagan with a single lap speed of 146.44mph. Hmiel went on to lead 32 of the 50 lap feature, battling for the top position with Bobby Santos III. Hmiel’s run was cut short when mechanical problems forced him off of the track with 7 laps to go. Running 3rd behind the leader battle RWB’s Bryan Clauson, in the #2b Maxim/Gaerte Chevy, was quick to move on Santos in the final laps. Taking the leader’s spot on lap 46, Clauson brought home the victory for the RWB Team. The night closed with the 100 lap Silver Crown feature where both Hmiel and teammate Jerry Coons, Jr. made a strong showing with a 4th and 5th place finish respectively. The finish moved Coons into the #3 spot for the 2010 points chase.

Brad kuhn and RWMS are the 2009 national midget champions!
Brad Kuhn tapped off the 2009 season at the Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, CA on Thanksgiving night with a 2009 USAC National Midget Championship. When asked about his thoughts on the year he simply said, "This year was pretty amazing, I mean considering we didn't have a team or a car of any kind at this time last year." The RWMS Midget success was a total team effort. Kuhn described the season as "awesome results in such a short period of time' because of Steve's and Scott's ability to put the right people in place."
Kuhn commented on the RWMS season as a whole, "The relationships developed over the year are the kind that will last a lifetime. Personal, business and racing relationships have grown immensely over this season. We reached the point where everyone was on the same page all the time. When things went wrong, everyone was looking at themselves for improvement and not pointing fingers. The individual improvements made the whole group better and it was really a lot of fun."
When asked if his lead in the Midget Standings and the possibility of capturing his first ever USAC Championship affected the way he approached every race he said, "Coming into the last part of the season I really didn't stress about points and finishes. As odd as it sounds, I knew I could only do my best preparing the car and the guys preparing the car and put our best foot forward and see how the cards fell. It has to be the biggest Championship so far of my career and because of the people around me I was more at ease than ever before."
Brad Kuhn's drive to the 2009 USAC National Midget Championship was a consistent journey through only finishing out of the top (10) three times all year long, with (1) win, (12) top 5's, and (11) top 10's.
